Hissing audio output Mac Mini
It’s not something I’ve come across with other Mac users, but the standard audio headphone output on my Mac Mini has a very annoying background hiss. My sound system is hooked up to my Mac Mini and especially during softer music, the hiss is very audible and extremely annoying. Things get really bad if one of my neighbours use the elevator - a very high pitched, ear-piercing noise blares through my speakers. Perhaps my system is an exception or my home is plagued with higher than usual electronic/magnetic interference. :s
Luckily, I found a solution — Griffin’s iMic completely got rid of the problem. With a bonus audio input capability thrown in. :)
I use the free and excellent SoundSource to quickly switch from the iMic USB Audio System to the Built-in Audio for fast switching between headphones and sound system.

Do you use by any change a wireless USB stick ?
(In case you bought your Mini without the wireless option => Mini G4)
If so, use an USB wire-extender. This way the high freq from the USB stick is much further away from the sound-circuit.

Wow this worked great! I have a minimac and hooked it up so I can edit sounds for sampling in music production. Every time I hooked ANYTHING to it, I would get this low level his. Not a ton, but enough to know that a little hiss here, and a little hiss there, by mix now you have a very noise mix to work with. I was pissed cause I had to use my old g4 for audio production. So I googled “mac mini hiss”, and low and behold I found this page. I actually had one of these Griffin’s iMic things around from when I stupidly bought a ibook when it didn’t have a audio in, which was hard to do on the fly audio editing. So I got this, then later bought a Macbook Pro, which has audio in and out, so the Griffin’s iMic went into a desk draw till today. Now its back in use and working great! VERY good solution and glad you decided to share it with the world! Many thanks!
